As the UK energy price cap rises by 13%, our new research with More in Common reveals just how central energy bills are to the cost-of-living crisis. Just one in 25 people believe the energy system works in the interests of 'ordinary households', fewer than one in five say their energy bills are affordable, and more than 80% are making sacrifices - including cutting back on going out - to keep up with the cost. With Andy Burnham exploring ways to bring down the cost of living, our findings make one thing clear: any credible plan must start with making electricity cheaper. Removing the levies that inflate electricity bills would be a strong first step, helping more people switch to electric heating and transport, reducing our dependence on expensive oil and gas, and bringing bills down for good.
